Expanding Virginia Mountain Communities

06-01-2007

Grayson County, (Southwest) Virginia – The developers of Fox Creek Falls have been frequently asked what the allure is to this type of new mountain community in Grayson County, Southwest Virginia. As rural Southwest Virginia becomes one of the next expanding frontiers in mountain communities along the Blue Ridge, there is a unique opportunity to determine how best to leverage and preserve its number one resource, raw natural beauty.

Outdoor lovers in the region all know about Grayson Highlands State Park, the Appalachian Trail (AT), the Virginia Creeper Trail, or the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail. AT hikers have rated this area the most beautiful of all the Appalachian Mountains. Theater goers all know about “Old Time Music” in Galax at the Rex, or stage productions at the Barter Theatre (The Virginia State Theater) in Abingdon. But few of these people have ever dreamed that they could actually live what a real mountain getaway is, and become part of the rich heritage of the region.

Fox Creek Falls is attractive to active middle-aged adults and empty-nesters for these reasons: (1) accessibility, (2) privacy, (3) buildable terrain, (4) access to rich cultural amenities, (5) access to nature and (6) low-impact development and home construction techniques, all within a 6-hour drive of the nation’s capital (or a 2-hour drive from places like Charleston, WV, Charlotte, NC, Winston-Salem, NC, Roanoke, VA, and Knoxville, TN).

Accessibility

The community is an easy stress-free 2-hour drive from downtown Charlotte, NC. Most North Carolina mountain communities are reached after traveling through multiple, congested, highly- populated urban corridors, only to arrive at a small mountain “city”.

Privacy

The people living in this area cherish their privacy. At Fox Creek Falls, you are surrounded by 120,000 acres of the Jefferson National Forest. We believe there is a high demand for privacy and security, but without being part of a 200+ lot subdivision, typical of other residential communities that quickly lead to heavy commercialization and social fragmentation.

Buildability

Because of the unique geology of the region, the mountain terrain is high enough to have cool summers but gentle enough to keep construction costs down, which is typical of many mountain communities in rough terrain.

Access to Cultural and Sporting Amenities

Many developers of new mountain communities “create” cultural and sporting amenities on-site. These efforts are largely self-defeating, as they can destroy what one is seeking to protect in a mountain environment, as well as isolate new families from the community at large. Fox Creek Falls is located near sporting facilities (tennis, golf, etc.) and musical heritage festivities, as well.

Access to Nature

As part of the federally funded Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area, large portions of Southwest Virginia contain National Forests that are primarily maintained for (non-motorized) recreational use, including hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. This means that a comprehensive 400+ mile system of trails is kept clear and accessible for the outdoor enthusiast year round. Other National Forest lands outside of an NRA are not maintained with the same level of accessibility. The Appalachian Trail, as well as the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, are directly accessible from Fox Creek Falls. A proposed federal expansion of the nearby Little Wilson Creek Wilderness area to the boundary of Fox Creek Falls will further protect the lands surrounding the community.
